"Baugh"
HENRY AND LEATHA BAUGH
Owen County (IN) Leader, December 24, 1913
Henry Baugh was born on a farm in Monroe County, Indiana, February 12, 1839,
and grew up to manhood in the occupation of a farmer. He was married to
Leatha Bales Smith in the same county in the year 1858. When the war of the
Rebellion came on, he enlisted as a soldier for the Union in Company B, 67th
Regiment, Indiana Volunteers on the 19th day of August 1862, and served his
country faithfully to the close of the war. After his return from the army,
he resided in Monroe County until about the year 1870 when he removed to the
town of Spencer where he continued to reside until the time of his death;
age 74 years, 10 months and 7 days. He was a charter member of Eden Lodge,
No. 99, Knights of Pythias. One brother and three sisters survive.
Leatha Bales was born in Monroe County, Indiana, May 1, 1838, died December
18, 1913, age 75 years, 7 months and 18 days. One brother and one sister
survive her. She was married to John Smith in 1853. To this union was born
one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Perry of Romona, Indiana. After the death of
John Smith she was married to Henry Baugh, above named, in the year 1858.
To this union were born ten children, six boys and four girls. Two of the
girls died in infancy, and one, Mrs. Ed Hopper, died some 13 years ago. The
surviving children are Mrs. Lyda Hardin, Mandeville, William, Albert, James
C. and Clinton. There are 26 grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Henry Baugh, owing to his service in the army and advancing age, has been in
declining health several years. About one week ago he became rapidly worse,
and his death was expected daily. On the morning of the 18th, while
ministering to his wants, Leatha Baugh, the faithful and devoted wife, was
stricken with apoplexy and suddenly passed away in the presence of her
grief-stricken husband.
Both husband and wife were converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal
Church in early youth. Their lives were along the quiet walks of life, and
they lived and died respected by all. Although their home was clouded by
many sorrows, they remained faithful to their vows to each other and to the
church to the last. Thus, these good people who had lived together 55 years
were practically together in death at the same moment of time.
Their joint funeral services were conducted by their pastor, Rev. John
Ragle, and with the rites of the Knights of Pythias at Spencer, Indiana, on
the 21st of December, 1913, in the presence of many of their descendants and
a large number of sympathizing friends. The interment was in Riverside
Cemetery.

DOUBLE FUNERAL
Owen County (IN) Leader, December 24, 1913
The funeral services for Henry Baugh and wife, 74 and 75 years old
respectively, were held Sunday afternoon at the residence and were very
impressive and were made all the more touching by the fact that after their
long life as husband and wife they passed away together.
Henry Baugh has long been a resident of Spencer and has always been
accounted a good citizen. He served two terms as town marshal some 20 years
ago. He has been in bad health of late years and last Thursday the family
realized that he was nearing death.
The wife had sat down on the edge of the bed to talk to him when she
suddenly pitched forward to the floor. When picked up, she was dead. She
was apparently in her usual health on the morning of her death and for this
reason the shock was all the more severe. Her death occurred at 7 AM
Thursday morning, and the husband lingered till 8 PM Friday evening.
These two have been married over 50 years, have toiled hard and have seen
much trouble and their going out together is a fitting finish to their long
and busy lives.
Mr. Baugh was a soldier in the Rebellion having twice enlisted, serving
something over three years.
On behalf of the G. A. R., Capt. D. E. Beam read the obituary.
The burial was in charge of the Knights of Pythias of which Mr. Baugh was a
charter member. He was one of the oldest Pythians, both in point of years
and length of membership, in Owen County.
Mr. Baugh and wife had long been members of the M. E. Church.
These two leave surviving them the following children: William, Mann and
Bert of Spencer, Mrs. Eliza Hardin of Romona, James of Indianapolis, Millard
and Clint of Bicknell and Jasonville, and Mrs. Stewart Perry. Another
daughter, Mrs. Ed Hopper, died several years ago.
