CHARLES J. ARNOLD grew up in the atmosphere of a 
newspaper office and newspaper work has been his 
occupation and business since early manhood. Mr. 
Arnold is owner and publisher of the Greencastle 
Herald. He was born at Greencastle, Indiana, 
January 21, 1879. His father, Frank A. Arnold, 
in was also a newspaper publisher. He was born 
in London, Ontario, Canada, and came to Putnam 
County, Indiana, more than forty-five years ago. 
He was for a number of year’s editors and 
publisher of the Greencastle Herald and was 
also vice president of the Central National 
Bank. He exemplified all the qualities of an 
upright and influential citizen and exercised 
much influence in public affairs. He died at 
Greencastle in April, 1917. He married, at 
Indianapolis, Elizabeth Boley, and they had 
a family of five children. The four daughters 
were: Ethel, wife of Prof. Francis Tilden, of
 Greencastle, and mother of three children; 
Frances, wife of J. L. Scripps, of Peoria, 
Illinois, and they also have three children; 
Edna, the wife of Jasper Killough, of Chicago; 
and Dorothy, deceased. Charles J. Arnold was 
educated in the public schools of Greencastle, 
and from high school entered DePauw University, 
where he remained until graduating, with high 
standing in scholarship. He had been through a 
general routine of newspaper work and after 
leaving college he went to Kansas City, Missouri, 
and was a reporter on the staff of the Kansas 
City, Star and Kansas City Journal. He has 
shown a natural aptitude for journalism. 
After returning to Greencastle he became 
associated with his brother-in-law, Francis 
C. Tilden, in the ownership of the Greencastle 
Herald, but later bought out Mr. Tilden and 
is now sole owner and publisher. The Herald 
is a newspaper that has been long established 
and has been a potent molder of public 
opinion. Mr. Arnold is a forceful and 
energetic businessman, and possesses 
many of the engaging personal qualities of 
the experienced men of his profession. He 
is a member of the Democratic Editorial 
Association, is a Beta Theta .Pi, and a 
member of the Greencastle Merchants 
Association. He married, October 12, 
1906, Miss Mabel Herring, of Kansas 
City, Missouri. They have reared as 
their own child the son of Mr. Arnold’s 
sister, Joseph James Adams, who is now 
eleven years old.
