Coal Miners

Coal mining was a major operation throughout our counties. It is puzzling that since there were 47,912 tons of coal mined during 1881 in Owen County alone- more men didn't list this as an occupation. These figures are taken from 1880 though. Perhaps many of the workers were from other counties as it was common that they were boarders in nearby homes giving the lady of the household an opportunity to make money also.
