COMBES CEMETERY
TAYLOR TOWNSHIP
VISIT OCTOBER 12, 2003
This cemetery looked pretty much as I remembered it from a visit in October of 1999.
Not much destruction, whatever is there is from simply the elements and the older stones.
Many of the persons buried here resided in the Quincy area as it sits about 1 mile south of there.
I did find, disturbing as it is that some of these graves are not located just where the cemetery book listing has them at. We are not talking about a shift of a couple of inches, but several rows and feet.
There were other markers that I found that are not listed in the cemetery book. These were not buried stones, but some of about 8 inches tall. So perhaps we shouldn' t rely too heavily on the cemetery listings being complete.
My own main areas of interests were in the family surnames of :
COMBS, McCULLOUGH, CARTER, BALDWIN/BALDON
Of the photos I took, some were just simply unreadable due to aging.
The listing of photos taken:
William McCullough 1793-1881
(This stone sits at the very back southeast corner all by itself)
There were a couple of bases next to his grave and one must be his wife although I have no proof of that.
Nancy R. Asher 1841-1868
This is the daughter of the above William, she married J.M. Asher. His grave is not there.
The following Carter plot sits on the east side of the old section in the back of the cemetery about 3 rows in.
Mahala Carter 1840-1866
This is another daughter of the above William . She is buried in the Carter section as she was the first wife of Ludwell Carter . HOWEVER, she is listed in the cemetery book as buried next to her father and the distance between that and where her stone really sits is at least 30 feet and in another row completely. Her stone also was broken in half in October of 1999, but is now nicely repaired and recemented. (By whom, I don't know).
C.A. CARTER 1835-1865
This is a son of John and Eliza (Nutterfield) Carter. He is the brother of the above mentioned Ludwell and the below mentioned Columbia. His name was Calvin and I have no idea what the A. stands for. He died during the Civil War within 6 months of his brother.Calvin was married to Rosella Baldwin, daughter of McKinney.
COLUMBIA CARTER 1843-1865
Another son of John and Eliza who also died in the Civil War. His stone is completely broken in half and hasn't been repaired. He was married to Sarah McDonald, daughter of John. Sarah later remarried to John Carter (no known relation) and during her marriage to Columbia there was a son born named Richard K who is buried next to Columbia.
Between the graves of Calvin and Columbia are two empty spaces. These I believe hold the mother of the two boys as well as their uncle who resided with them. Both of these died in 1866 and 1860 respectively; so in the same time frame. I know it is a 6 grave family plot but only the mother is listed as buried there, but there is no stone.
FLORIDA TAYLOR 1866-1866
This stone lies directly behind the above mentioned Richard K. Carter . She was the infant daughter of Jerome Taylor and Lucy Carter (Lucy was a daughter of John & Eliza) she and Jerome migrated to Missouri. This stone isn't listed in the cemetery books either and it is about 8 inches tall. Although her birth is listed in the family bible, her death 4 days later wasn't . She wasn't found in any census records, so this was a really nice find for me. I know what became of her now.
THOMAS R. BALDON 1836-1926
FANNY BALDON 1880-1932
This stone sits on the west side of the old section in the last row. It is almost impossible to read in a photo as the names are engraved in a metal plate attached to the stone. Thomas was the son of James Baldon & Matilda Nutterfield. James was the brother of the above mentioned McKinney. Fannie was the daughter of William Baldwin and Julia Walker. William was a brother of James and McKinney.
JOHN C. BALDON 1889-
ESTHER O C BALDON 1883-1919
Again this stone is done with the metal plate so I am hoping it shows up. John is the son of the above Thomas and Fannie. It is unknown who her parents were but her maiden name was Lasson.
LUDWELL M COMBS 1827-1916
LUCINDA COMBS 1829-1895
Ludwell was the son of the Owen county pioneer William Combs. Ludwell and Lucinda resided in Quincy. Lucinda was the daughter of McKinney Baldwin above. Their daughter Josephine and her husband Adolphus Orrell are buried next to them. Ludwell and Lucinda are on one stone about dead center of the back older section.
CHARLEY CHRISTENBERRY
s/o AH & NJ
This is an infant's grave, but the name caught my eye and I know that Mike Rastatter is researching the Christenberry lineages. It was an older grave at the back and rapidly deteriorating.
I believe these are all the photos taken at the Combs Cemetery.
