Well Diggers and Ditchers

This page updated November 5, 2005

Well diggers were of course mean who were out there digging the wells after it had been determined just where the water on a property was. Ditchers worked in a variety of areas, but many of them worked as they were building the roads.

It should be understood though that many of the men who had the equipment to perform these tasks normally did so for their neighbors on a bartering system. They would perform this service and the neighbor would perform another task for them. Many times money never changed hands, so perhaps these men didn't view it as such an "occupation".
