Physicians in the early days were sometimes formally trained through schooling and others were simply certified by virtue of having worked with another doctor for a certain number of years. Many of them becoming declared doctors by nothing more then an affidavit signed by the other doctor. In some communities, the doctors were, I think, some of the lowest paid men with exception of the ministers. The doctors were normally paid not in cash, but in goods such as wheat, corn, etc. Many of these men also carried a good number of clients for years waiting for payment...sometimes in vain.
