Source: Nodaway County Missouri History "or" Medical Directory History of Nodaway Co., Mo. Dr. J.W. Dean stock dealer, was born at Gosport, Owen County, Indiana, February 20, 1842. His parents, John and Mary (Gardner) Dean, were both natives of Kentucky. J. W. was reared to manhood at his birthplace, receiving his education at Asbury University in Greencastle, Indiana. When eighteen he commenced the study of Medicine at Rush Medical College of Chicago, from which institution he graduated in January, 1863. Dr. Dean then became assistant surgeon of the Sixty-seventh Indiana Infantry, and went to Vicksburg. While there he was taken sick and returned home. In the fall of 1863 he commenced a course of lectures at Jefferson Medical College and was graduated in March, 1864. He soon began practicing at Gosport, Indiana. and continued therein until the 7th of September, 1868 when he immigrated west and arrived in Maryville, Missouri the 9th of September 1868, having to travel by stage from Savannah, Missouri.
