New Albany Daily Ledger, 6 July 1858 "MURDER IN GOSPORT" Gentleman Last Evening, between 5 and 6 o'clock, three brothers named John, Hugh, and Joseph Murphy got into a drunken quarrel, and John killed Joseph by cutting him in the neck, nearly severing the head from his body. He also, after his brother had fallen, struck him twice in the back, cutting into his lungs. The doctors say that either of the wounds was mortal. The two surviving brothers were immediately arrested and are now safe in jail. The murdered man, some two years ago, cut a man's throat across the river from this place. There was strong talk last night of taking the other brothers out and hanging them.
