Owen County Orphanage Photo
Date Taken: about 1905-1907
Submitted by James Rader
The photo is thought to be of the "orphanage" that James Rader's maternal grandfather was placed in at an early age. His aunt believes he is seated at the far left end of the first row. His name is Arthur Dickey and he was born 02 FEB 1895 in Patricksburg, Indiana. It is possible his older brother, Grover C. Dickey, born 23 Dec 1893 (in the same area) is in the photo too; however, he doesn't know which one he is. His grandfather told stories of being at an orphanage when he was a young boy; in the springtime he would be "farmed out" to a family to help on their farm during the crop growing months. I don't know any of the other names in the photo. I remember mom saying there were friends/relatives by the name of Megenhardt and Baumgartner in the Owen and Clay County areas. Arthur Dickey's parents names are Irvin Elias Dickey and Catherine or Cassie M. (Roth) Dickey. His paternal grandparents names are Emanuel and Magdalena (Mishler) Dickey. Emanuel and Magdalena are buried in Beech cemetery near Coal City. Emanuel and Magdalena Dickey moved with their family of 11 children to Marion twp., Owen county, Indiana in the year of 1851 from Holmes county, Ohio. They cleared land, built a cabin and started farming.

The Minister at the time was Rev. Rowelette, I believe he is the older man at the top of the photo, I know his wife is in there too, but I'm not sure if she is the lady in front of him with the dark dress on or not? I am in the front row, from the left,I am the sixth person, I think the boy setting next to me is Daryl White, Rita Matkins is in the third row from the bottom, BUT she is the girl in the middle of the row, with the dark skirt with straps and short black hair and her mother are farther up, the lady in the dark dress and the blonde girl in front of her, but I just know their last name..... maybe some other readers will know who some of the others are.

The older woman standing in the front row, on the far
left, next to the man in the dark suit, is my grandmother, Ada Belle
Carter May. Her parents, or maybe grandparents, were Moses Carter
(Feb 8, 1830 -Mar 2, 1903) and Ellen Carter (Apr 22, 1837 - Apr 26
1900), buried in Vandalia cemetery. One of her siblings is Amanda
Carter Beaman (1871 - 1944), buried in the cemetery in Spencer. The only other person I can identify is the younger woman in
the front row, with the dark hair, who is third from the right. She
is Ada's daughter, my Aunt Elnora May Vaughn.

Quincy Old Settlers Picnic
They are Margaret Hughes Lyon and James Allison Lyon. I have some
names of some of the other people, but don't know who is who. They are
Jennie
Asher Sallust, Maggie Hartsock Ross, Matilda Hartsock, Barton Hartsock, Mrs.
Solomon Hetser, Amanda Baker. The boy with his hands in front of him is
Paul
Reid, the Lyons grandson. The other boy is Alva Cradick, also my relation.
There is a Marvin Scott, Old Hundred Evans (?), Jess Evans, Jim Devore, John
Fain Evans, Harve Steele, Jerry Devore, Beck Baker, Mrs. Baker, Jim Hill,
John
Will Mugg, Capt. Whitson. Capt. Whitson is said to be the man with white V
shirt, but that didn't narrow it down any for me! Harvey Steele is next to
Mrs. Lyon on her left side. I've seen a reference somewhere else that the
old
man in front is "Uncle Billy Combs".
