There were many more hotels then would be expected during this time frame. However, with the families having so many children, perhaps they had no rooms for relatives. Both hotels and boardinghouses were more commonly utilized by workers who would work in one region but lived in another. This would reduce the commute home for them. It was also quite common to find single men who lived alone making the boarding house their home.
