Notes for JOHN BALDWIN:

Sources:

[1] 1810--1820--John was living in Nelson Co.KY....with his parents...Thomas BALDWIN & Margaret SPARROW....and his siblings....5 brothers and 3 sisters

[2] Sometime between 1820 and 1830 most of the BALDWIN boys and sisters migrated to Owen Co.IN....I believe that their Mother came with them, but so far I haven't found any evidence that the father moved to IN....She might have been the older woman living in the household of son James in Owen Co....

[3] this was on the Will of Daniel BEEM of Owen Co.IN.......dated Nov 1824

Signed, sealed, and published in presents of us: John Baldwin, James Shipman and AlexAMeek. (no date) Daniel X (his X mark) Beem

[4] John first appeared on the Tax List in Owen Co.IN for the year1824, 1827& 1828......sometime after he more than likely secured a place to live , he must have traveled back to KY and married Elizabeth Thomas in Spencer Co. 1 Mar 1828......then moved with her back to Owen Co.

Notes for GEORGE BALDWIN: Sources:

[1] I have copies of the Land Patent papers where George Baldon of Putnam Co.IN purchased land in Owen Co. 1 April 1848 from the land office at Crawfordsville, IN.....80 acres, neighbors on one parcel of land were: Allen Asher, Joseph Asher, Thomas Asher, Geo., Buchanan Ezekiel, Thomas Jones, Wm.R.Mannan, Norton Greenleaf and James Truax{who was married to George's Aunt Mariah Boldon}....the other parcel's neighbors were:Peter N. Appergate, Allen Asher, Geo., Benjamin Beels, John Brown, Andrew J. Gray, George Monroe, Scott W. Young......I could not find George Baldon or other spellings on the 1850 Census for the whole state? His parents and siblings were living in Putnam Co.Monroe Twp.in 1850.....{do not know if this was my George Baldwin or another one?} *****

12N 2W is in Harrison Twp. Section 29 is in the northeast quadrant of the township. SESE would indicate probably 40 acres in the se corner of the section and would be about a mile from the Morgan Co line on the east and a mile from Putman Co line on the north. section 28 is the property on the east side of 29. This would be beside 29 and between it and Morgan Co. Again probably 40 acres this was for the Geo.B. property I found................

Stones River

Other Names: Mufreesborogh

Location: Rutherford County

Campaign: Stones River Campaign (1862-63)

Date(s): December 31, 1862-January 2, 1863

Principal Commanders: Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans [US]; Gen. Braxton Bragg [CS]

Forces Engaged: Army of the Cumberland [US]; Army of Tennessee [CS]

Estimated Casualties: 23,515 total (US 13,249; CS 10,266)

Description: After Gen. Braxton Bragg's defeat at Perryville, Kentucky, October 8, 1862, he and his Confederate Army of the Mississippi retreated, reorganized, and were redesignated as the Army of Tennessee. They then advanced to Mufreesborogh, Tennessee, and prepared to go into winter quarters. Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans's Union Army of the Cumberland followed Bragg from Kentucky to Nashville. Rosecrans left Nashville on December 26, with about 44,000 men, to defeat Bragg's army of more than 37,000. He found Bragg's army on December 29 and went into camp that night, within hearing distance of the Rebels. At dawn on the 31st, Bragg's men attacked the Union right flank. The Confederates had driven the Union line back to the Nashville Pike by 10:00 am but there it held. Union reinforcements arrived from Rosecrans's left in the late forenoon to bolster the stand, and before fighting stopped that day the Federals had established a new, strong line. On New Years Day, both armies m arked time. Bragg surmised that Rosecrans would now withdraw, but the next morning he was still in position. In late afternoon, Bragg hurled a division at a Union division that, on January 1, had crossed Stones River and had taken up a strong position on the bluff east of the river. The Confederates drove most of the Federals back across McFadden's Ford, but with the assistance of artillery, the Federals repulsed the attack, compelling the Rebels to retire to their original position. Bragg left the field on the January 4-5, retreating to Shelbyville and Tullahoma, Tennessee. Rosecrans did not pursue, but as the Confederates retired, he claimed the victory. Stones River boosted Union morale. The Confederates had been thrown back in the east, west, and in the Trans-Mississippi. Result(s): Union victory ***********************

[5] It was in these records that I first learned that George had been married twice....first 8 Dec. 1854 in Putnam Co.,IN. to Eliza Ellen Stobaugh....I have a copy of the marriage Lic. and second to Edney Ann McGowen...6 Nov 1856 in Boone Co.,IN......his name was listed on both as George Balden.

[6] It has come to light that George and Eliza Ellen had a Daughter Mary Ann Baldwin.....shortly after that time Eliza died in 1855.....George asked his father to raise Mary Ann....and she lived with her grandparents until she married in 1871 in Mont. Co.IN to William Jefferies. 8/99.....my contact person is Seria Barker she is a dec. of Mary Ann through the Stobaugh line. I have copies of Mary Ann's guardianship papers. The information is listed under Mary Ann.

[7] *NOTE* I found a second set of Guardianship papers listed under George BALDON & Mary A. BALDON filed in Owen Co.IN....26 May 1865 by a Mr.William C. Halbert.......the papers go further to state that Mr. Halbert hasn't had any contact with Mary A. BALDON nor has anything come into his hands concerning this estate .....but he is seeking payment for Clerk and stamp costs......it goes further to state in the final report dated 1870 that the girl being about 15 years of age has lived with her grandparents and he has not had any contact with her and wishes to be discharged from this guardianship.......

Mary Jane was the d/o Eglantine (Huffman) & Jeptha Parker. So, IF Eglantine was the sister of Artemissa (Huffman) Baldwin, Mary J. (Parker) Ham was Artemissa Baldwin's niece. This is the 1st piece of documentation that seems to point toward Eglantine's parentage. The Jury is still out though. Wish the Obit had said what relationship the Hams had to Artemissa. [6] OBIT: Margaret Baldwin, Daughter of John and Elizabeth Baldwin, was born September 12, 1844, in Owen County, Indiana. She was married to Elijah Zachary June, 1858. with whom she lived in happy companionship until he died in 1896. Her parents moved from Owen Co. when she was a little girl to the neighborhood of Smartsburg where she grew to young womanhood, coming from there to Crawfordsville many years ago. IN 1914 she was again married to Perry Harrell of this city who survives. She died from the infirmities of age at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed. Chesterson where she had gone for a visit. Besides her husband the following children survive her: Mrs. Martha Brown, Mrs. Ada Chesterson, Ben Zachary, Mrs. Nettie Nichols and Jacob Zachary, all of this city. Also several grandchildren and great grandchildren, besides many friends. She is the last one of her family. Mrs. Harrell united with the Methodist church in early womanhood. After her marriage to Mr. Harrell she changed her membership to the First Baptist church of this city Mrs. Harrell's opportunities for an education were very limited but she was a student of God's beautiful universe. She lived close to her maker by her constant associations of His creations. She loved the flowers, the trees, the birds and the whole country at large. She was kindly disposed to all living creatures and her yard was a veritable flower garden. She was a plain, unassuming good woman. Her life was one of toil, but she had a sweet, sunny disposition and always saw a silver lining to the darkest cloud. More About MARGARET BALDWIN: Census: June 28, 1858, Mar.
