MORE MURDER One Man Killed and Two Wounded at Spencer, Indiana New Albany Ledger; February 9, 1870 In Spencer, Owen County, this state on Friday evening, a desperate character named John Rose, while drunk, visited the drug store of Dr. William Seals, and without any provocation commenced a tirade of abusive language against Dr. Seals and another who was present. The Doctor bore his conduct for some time and at last was forced to expel him from his store. This enraged Rose to such an extent that he drew his revolver and commenced firing upon the Doctor. After shooting five times without hitting him, he left and went to his home. That night, Rose, before he had recovered from his drunken spree, was married to a lady to whom he had been for some time engaged. On Saturday morning, a writ having been sworn for the arrest of Rose, a Deputy Sheriff, with a posse of three men proceeded to the house of Rose for the purpose of making the arrest. Upon arriving near the premises they found there were several men in the house. Rose met them at the gate and told the posse not to come any further; that if they did, they would do so at their peril. He then drew his revolver and made ready for a fight. The Deputy Sheriff and his party approached and Rose commenced firing. His fire was promptly returned by the Sheriff's party and one of the shots taking effect in the body of Rose, killed him almost instantly. One of Rose's shots took effect in the thigh of Deputy Sheriff Brannon, inflicting a painful, but not a serious wound and another of the deputies was wounded with a stone hurled at him by one of Rose's companions. We have heard some details in connection with this matter that we do not care to make public as they might injuriously affect some of the parties. Whisky was at the bottom of the whole affair, however.
