Judges
&
Justices of the Peace

This page updated February 8, 2013

A JUDGE had a broader scope of authority then the local J.P. did. His presence was felt in the criminal and civil courts of the county. In most instances, his word was the final one.

JUSTICES were normally elected within the townships. They were the ones who signed Wills, worked with the Probate proceedings. They held small court hearings of their own similar to our current day small claims court.

Instead of splitting these up, I will simply specify in what capacity each of these men served.
