The lightning rod agent was a salesman who solicited lightning rods on a door to door basis. For some, this was considered to be a highly lucrative job with sales prospects very high. Of course, the sales were made much easier when a salesman would stress the point of actually needing one if they valued their home. Lightning rods were used to "draw" the electricity and send it into the ground instead of striking one's home. Not many people relished the thought of their home being burnt down.
