MANNAN CEMETERY

HARRISON TOWNSHIP

OWEN COUNTY IN

Although it goes by the same name, it is readily viewable that this section of the Mannan Cemetery is definitely not under the same caretakers as the one that sits across the road in Morgan county.

This cemetery used to be under the care of a group of 6 trustees and through deaths, it came down to one of them. It is now in the hands of the Harrison township trustees office.

Mind you, I didn't say under the "care" of.... only in the hands of.

The grass is about 7-8 inches tall and many of the stones are leaning badly and the whole place has a rather deserted appearance to the passerby. This greatly saddens me as I have many family members buried here.

My main surname interests in this section of Mannan are:

McCULLOUGH, LOCKHART, SECREST, CARTER, TRUAX, MURPHY

The photos taken here were:

JOHN S. LOCKHART 1861-1959

John was the son of John R. and Rachel (Evans) Lockhart. He was married to Monnie Truax, their names are on the same stone.

MONNIE (TRUAX) LOCKHART 1871-1943

Monnie was the daughter of John Truax and Elizabeth Jane Carter. The above two are my 2nd great grandparents.

RACHEL (EVANS) LOCKHART 1837-1901

Rachel was the daughter of John Evans and Lucy Massey. She was the mother of the above mentioned John S. Lockhart. It is unknown where John R., her husband is buried.

CLARA LOCKHART 1894-1960

Clara was the daughter of John S. Lockhart and Monnie Truax above. She was crippled as a young girl after a diagnosis of tuberculosis of the bone. She always resided in the Harrison township area and briefly worked at the Creamery.

ROBERT McCULLOUGH 1826-1909

Robert is the son of the William M. McCullough buried in the Combes Cemetery. He is also the grandson of early Owen county pioneer John McCullough.

TAMER (HAMRICK) McCULLOUGH 1822-1910

Tamer was the daughter of William Hamrick and Sarah Shore. Together with her husband above they raised their family in the Quincy area.

MARGARET McCULLOUGH 1824-1904

Margaret was also the daughter of William M. McCullough and presumably never married as she is found residing in the home of her brother, Robert above, in the 1880 census under her maiden name.

LUDWELL CARTER 1837-1925

Ludwell was the son of John Carter and Eliza Nutterfield. He resided in the Eminence area of Morgan County. Through his two marriages he and his wife raised 10 children; two of whom were from his first marriage to Mahala McCullough (buried in Combes). Ludwell was a family oriented man who held several family reunions during his lifetime.

MAGGIE A. (RUMPLE) CARTER 1843-1933

Margaret was the daughter of Jacob Rumple and Elizabeth Baldwin. She was the second husband of Ludwell above.

ROSELLA (BALDWIN) CARTER 1833-1920

Rosella was the daughter of McKinney and Mary (Murphy) Baldwin. Rosella was married only one time to Calvin Carter (son of John & Eliza). After his death during the Civil War, she never remarried. She continued to reside in the Harrison township area.

JOHN S. CARTER 1856-1893

John was the son of Calvin Carter and Rosella Baldwin above. John was married to Delphinia Whicker and they were the parents of two children; Homer and Rosie. It is unknown just what became of his widow or his children.

MILLIE E CARTER 1854-1906

Her real name was Parnelia Chainey and she was the second wife of George Mason Carter (son of John Carter and Eliza Nutterfield). It is unknown who her parents were.

SARAH BELL McCULLOUGH 1868-1901

Sarah was the daughter of William H. McCullough and Martha Beaman listed below.

WILLIAM H. McCULLOUGH 1847-1933

William was the son of Robert McCullough and Tamer (Hamrick) listed above. William and Martha were the parents of 6 known children.

MARTHA J. (BEAMAN) McCULLOUGH 1846-1928

Martha was the daughter of Eli Beaman and Tereezer Langdon. I know nothing more of her then that.
