JESS MCDOWELL DIES AT HOME IN QUINCY

Gosport Reporter- 30 Aug 1945

"Former County Assessor Was Widely Known; Funeral Held Tuesday"

Jesse McDowell, 78, widely known Owen county man, died at his home in Quincy last Saturday night at 9 o'clock. He had been in ill health for some time but did not become seriously ill until a few days prior to his death. He was "feeling fine for an old fellow of eighty," as he expressed it to inquiring friends at the Quincy picnic on August 13, which he attended and seemed to enjoy thoroughly. An ardent Democrat, Mr. McDowell took great interest in county politics and was active in his party's work. For some time he served as county assessor. Besides his farming interests, Mr. McDowell was a minister of the gospel, but held no pastorate, preferring to do evangelistic work and at times preach in churches over this section as guest minister. He was a member of the Methodist church. Mr. McDowell is survived by his wife. Funeral services were held at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday morning at the Methodist church in Quincy, conducted by the Rev. John Wooten. Burial was in Mannan Cemetery.
