Milliners

This page updated November 4, 2005

Milliners were persons who not only created and made hats; but the term was applied to the shop owners as well. These workers were artists indeed as some of the creations during this era were quite elaborate. This occupation was one of the few the women could actually fill without ridicule. It should be noted that during a part of our history, it was unthinkable that a lady would appear in public without a hat.
