Mill Operators (All Kinds) This page updated February 18, 2008 There were several different types of mills in the counties. They all of course had their owners. Not all men specified just what type of mills they were the owners of. Where possible, I will designate which they are. The different mills were: Saw Mill-- where lumber was cut into the various different types of wood used. Flour Mill--where flour was ground out of wheat, local farmers brought their wheat here. When a man stated that he was "a miller", he normally would be from this type of mill. Grist/Grain Mill--The grist mill was normally the term used for the mills grinding corn into cornmeal. The designation of Grain Mill could mean one that ground corn meal or flour. These mills would of course grind rye or buckwheat as well.
