WILLIAM A MONTGOMERY

Gosport Reporter; February 1885

William A. Montgomery was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, October 30, 1824, being 60 years,3 months and 24 days old. In 1834 he came with his parents to Indiana, and located in Rush County. Shortly after they came to Owen County and located on a farm in Montgomery township. Mr. Montgomery was apprenticed to a tailor in Gosport with whom he worked for seven years. Saving his earnings, he went to Indianapolis and learned to cut clothing. Returning to Gosport he opened a tailor shop of his own continuing for eleven years, having added a stock of clothing. Forming a partnership with J.M. Alexander in the mercantile business three years and then went into the same business with J.M. Stucky and Alfred Brown. Mr. Stucky shortly retired and the business was continued for some time by Montgomery & Brown. During the time, Mr. M. was reading law. he sold out and sojourned in Minnesota for his health. Returning he went into the mercantile business again, and in eight years sold out and began the practice of law which he has since followed. In 1867. he with A.H. Pettit, opened a bank. Mr. P. soon retiring, who was followed by Mr. M.'s son-in-law, J.R. Henry, the firm name having been for many years Montgomery & Henry, who are extensive stock raisers as well. Mr. Montgomery was married in 1849 to Mildred A. Day of Monroe County, raising three child, two daughters and a son, all of whom are grown and live in Gosport. Mr. M. was an efficient member of the Masons lodge and was buried by that order.
