Gosport, Ind., February 24--
Hon. Williams A. Montgomery committed suicide this morning between 8 and 9 o'clock by hanging himself. For some weeks past he has been almost incapacitated for business by failing health and depressed in spirits. Mr. Montgomery's family were apprised by the physician that his mind was affected and measures were taken to guard him. He spent an almost sleepless night, but this morning partook of a fair breakfast and seemed cheerful. He took a broom and swept all the walks about his residence and placed the broom within the kitchen. For some fifteen or twenty minutes he was lost sight of, and on the suggestion of his daughter, search was made and he was found suspended in his barn and entirely lifeless. What should have so worked upon his mind as to cause the rash act no one knows, for he had been successful in life and happy in his domestic relations. He has been a leader in politics here and was a delegate to the last National Republican Convention. He also took an active part in the campaign. He was a banker and one of the wealthiest men in the community. His loss will be deeply felt here and in adjoining counties.
