OLD LITTLE MOUNT CEMETERY VISIT
WAYNE TOWNSHIP, OWEN COUNTY
OCTOBER 12, 2003
I guess if truth be told, this is one of my favorite cemeteries to visit.
An ancestor of mine was one of the men who donated land for the building of the Little Mount Church in May of 1823 so I feel a connection as the cemetery sits in what was the churchyard.
Many of the tombstones that are listed in the cemetery book are now faded into the ground or just completely gone now. The overall condition of the cemetery is good, it is just mainly the toll the time takes on a cemetery.
Photos taken here:
AILCY TRUAX 1783-1856
Her maiden name was Combs and she was the daughter of Edward Combs and Rebecca Stillwell. Ailcy came to Owen county with her husband, William, from Nelson county KY about 1823 settling in Wayne township. Her stone is very old and now is broken in half since 1999.
WILLIAM TRUAX 1762-1835
William migrated here from Nelson county KY and was the husband of the above mentioned Ailcy. William was the son of Benjamin Truax and Parthenia Pittman. Although his stone is much older then many of the others in the cemetery, it is in surprisingly great shape.
MARIAH (BALDWIN) TRUAX 1803-1838
Her stone sits about 3 down from her inlaws William Truax and Ailcy Combs. Mariah was the first wife of James Allison Truax, who later married Arlita Chambers.
JAMES ALLISON TRUAX 1802-1875
James was the son of the above mentioned William and was married to the above Mariah. He and his second wife, Arlita are buried under the same stone at the rear of the cemetery next to their daughter, Minerva.
ARLITTA (CHAMBERS) TRUAX 1815-1894
She was the second wife of James Truax above. It is unknown just who her parents were. Her photo can be found in our photo section along with James.
Another notation regarding the Little Mount Cemetery, I feel that Hannah (Truax) Baldwin; daughter of William and Ailcy is most definitely buried here, but no stone was found. She was the first wife of James Baldwin who donated the land to the church. They were both church members of the Little Mount Church from its founding in 1823. James continued his membership till 1847 well past Hannah's death. He remarried on May 27, 1834. There IS a listing in the cemetery book for a Thomas Baldon; their son who was born in 1816 and died in 1832. So, I am wondering if perhaps that death date gives a clue as to a death date for Hannah as well. That would leave almost two years before James remarriage, so acceptable time frame. Her father, William Truax was also a man of financial means in the county as well as Hannah's husband; so I cannot imagine a tombstone not being erected for her as her father also made provisions in his Will for her heirs in 1834. Her death is completely unknown, but can be assumed to have occurred prior to her husband's remarriage in May of 1834 .
