Painters/White Washers This page updated October 4, 2005 When referring to the painters; these men could be ones that painted houses as well as the signs. Some of the men specified that they were strictly house painters. I will note those men where possible. Whitewash was a type of paint most commonly made from slaked lime dissolved in water. Throughout history other items have been added such as flour or milk. This concoction was used as an inexpensive alternative to standard paint.
