According to the definition given in Websters for this occupation it is: the study of the conformation of the skull based on the belief that it is indicative of mental faculties and character. In "normal" language, I take this to mean that there was some theory that the size and shape of a person's skull had a bearing on his mental abilities and his social character. Not surprisingly, I found only one person holding that position in the counties.
