Poor Houses (or County Homes)
This page updated March 3, 2007
Residents of the county Poor Houses or Poor Farms as they were also known; were not simply people who were poor. There were a variety of different reasons that people were residents there. Sometimes these consisted of entire families. Listings of these residents has proved not that easy to locate. In order to build up this new section, it would be greatly appreciated and helpful, if you, the visitor could submit any names to me that you know of as residents of these various homes.
The submissions DO NOT have to be a complete listing; if you simply have one member of your families that were residents at a certain time, please send it in and we can start a listing.
These pages will continue to be a work in progress as long as I am finding entries for it.
Researching Tip from Vickie Stevens- Anyone searching for children that were put in poorhouse should check the Board of State Charities Indianapolis Ind. This is where we found all records for my Grandmother
When making these submissions, please let me know:
Name of Person/Family
Reason for residency
Which County you are referring to (Morgan/Owen/Putnam)
A time frame for the residency
VARIOUS REASONS FOR RESIDENCY
Homeless Families
Destitute Families
Victims of Domestic Abuse
Unwed Mothers
Orphans
Injured Workers (with nobody else to house them)
Handicapped People (to include insanity, blind, sometimes deaf or dumb, otherwise impaired)
Sick People (Those not able to afford treatment elsewhere)
Although the following areas do not pertain to our specific counties, I am including them here as a service to our researchers who may be following their ancestors to other counties. Below you will find most of the OTHER counties in Indiana with a listing of the 1880 residents of their poorfarms. These were provided by Glorianne Fahs and it seemed a shame to waste the valuable information. I might also remind our researchers to search in surrounding counties for their ancestors.
Remember though, these are OTHER COUNTIES, not townships in OUR counties.
I have realized that there are some counties not listed here; I will add those at the end and they will be out of alphabetical order. The ones without links I haven't located yet, I am working on these.
