ADA MAE QUERY

April 10, 1919, Owen County Democrat

Submitted by Mike Rastatter

Ada, daughter of Thomas and Nancy Query was born April 24, 1895, and departed this life on April 1st, 1919. She was a true and loving daughter. Ada was converted and united with the church at Mt. Pleasant last November a year ago while her name has only been registered a little more than a year on the class book. All her young life has been spent in usefulness and in helping as a loving and dutiful daughter. She was taken sick a little more than two weeks ago, while everything was done that loving hands and friends could do to relieve her suffering and restore her back to health, yet God saw best. We do not understand why, to take her home. Ada loved this beautiful world and was so anxious to live and prayed so earnestly to be spared, but God knew best and she was prepared to meet her loving savior. In the community she will be missed. The church has suffered a great loss, the neighbors speak of Ada as a true Christian and a good girl. In the home her loss is irreparable. She leaves to mourn her loss father, mother, five brothers, many relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Oscar Kaylor at Mt. Pleasant to a large assembly of friends..

DORA MILES QUERY

Submitted by Mike Rastatter

Dora Miles (Dode) Query, 59 years old, a brother of the late Nathaniel Query, was found dead Sunday. He had hanged himself with a clothesline tied to a rafter in the kitchen of the home near Atkinsonville, where he lived alone. He had stood on a stool, adjusted the noose and then had kicked the stool away. He was found by James Fleming and W. C. Haltom, his nearest neighbors. They had become alarmed when no smoke was seen coming from his chimney, and went to investigate. Looking through a window, they saw his body hanging. It was decided by the coroner, James Rowland, that he had been dead since Wednesday. His brother, Nathaniel Query, had hanged himself, Sunday, February 28, and was buried Wednesday of last week. "Dode" Query had been notified by a neighbor of the burial of his brother and it is thought he hanged himself shortly after hearing the news. He (Dode) had been married to an Illinois woman and they had several children. They had been separated for some time and the wife had returned to Illinois. Her address is not known by any of the Query neighbors. Sheriff Frank Mitten was notified of the death of Mr. Query and he, together with Coroner James Rowland and son, Gilbert, investigated. The body was frozen hard and it was the opinion of the officers that he had been dead since Wednesday evening. Surviving him are the following brothers and sisters: Charles Query of Straughn, Indiana; Mrs. Ann Haltom of Poland; Mrs. Maggie Haltom of Spencer; Mrs. Della James of Terre Haute, and Mrs. Martha Randall of Vandalia. JAMES GARFIELD QUERRY

Owen County Democrat, Spencer, Indiana, June 22, 1926

Submitted by Mike Rastatter

James Garfield Querry, son of Solomon and Mary Querry, was born in Owen County, April 12, 1880 and departed this life June 4, 1926 at the age of 46 years, I month and 24 days. He was united in Marriage to Minnie Christenberry, December 15, 1901. To this union were born six children, Lenna, who preceded her father in death and five living; Ora 23, Arthur 21, Nina 17, Harlin 11 and Beulah 10. Mr. Querry lived all his life in Owen County. The most of his life was spent in sin, thinking little about God and salvation until three weeks before his death. Since his last illness the Lord had talked to him about where he was going to spend "Eternity" until he said that he was just starved for God and wanted to know that he was right with his fellowmen and also the Lord. On the 22nd day of May, after praying and confessing all night, the Lord broke in upon his soul and spoke peace and washed his sins away, giving him assurance that he was ready for heaven. He left the testimony behind that his only regret was that he did not start earlier that his life might have told for God and proven to the world there is power in the Blood of Jesus. He said that the last few weeks of his life had been the happiest that he had ever known because of the presence of the Jesus. Besides widow and children he leaves to mourn his absence three brothers, William, Dora, and Charles Querry; four sisters, Mrs. Maggie Haltom, Mrs. Matt Randles, Mrs. Anna Haltom, Mrs. Dell James and a host of relatives and friends. JAMES WILLIAM CURTIS QUERY

Submitted by Mike Rastatter

James William Curtis Querry of Quincy, Indiana, beloved son of Miles and Jessie (Stevens) Querry, was born at Mt. Pleasant near Cataract, Indiana, on February 12, 1869, and departed this life January 21, 1938, at 11:58am at the age of 68 years, 11 months and 9 days. He was the third of a family of six children, namely Henry Querry of Poland, Tom Querry, deceased, then Curtis Querry, Mollie Sackett, deceased, Fred Querry of Cloverdale and Robert Querry of Sand Cut, Indiana. In 1894 he united with the Methodist Church at Mt. Pleasant and in 1920 he moved his membership to Mill Grove Methodist Church, where he remained a faithful member until his death. As a Church and Sunday School worker he was very faithful, having been influential in organizing a Sunday School at Oakland, and a yearly basket dinner meeting on his farm there at Oakland. In life we knew him as a Christian man, being Sunday School Superintendent, and always ready to offer prayer at service. At home he always said grace at the family table, and his place at that table will be greatly missed. On January 1st. 1893 he was united in Holy matrimony to Emma Ann Jones. To this union were born nine children, namely, Ottie, Minnie, Hazel, Ted, Edward, Mae, George, Claude and Lena. They all learned to know him as Dad, and he was a devoted father to all of his children. He was always ready to give them advice and came to their assistance in case of need. Honesty was his password and we will strive to continue those ideas. The community in which he lived, and the associates that knew him, can testify as to these qualities as he took a man at his word, and like our Master he was of a forgiving disposition, never holding malice against anyone. He was an employee of Monon railroad for about 45 years and was a retired railroad man at his death, this being his main occupation. He leaves many close friends on the Monon. Dad was the first to break the family circle. Few families of eleven grow to manhood without a bereavement and only Jesus can know the greatness of this loss in this life to us. He leaves to mourn his departure a faithful and devoted wife, nine children, 21 grandchildren, other relatives and host of neighbors and friends. Burial: Combes Cemetery, Taylor Township, Owen County, Indiana.

She went to the hospital on Friday, February 21 and after a week's treatment, underwent a surgical operation, which proved to be more than she could stand, at the close of the third day, "Her Savior called her to come up higher." And she passed peacefully away at 12 o'clock on Sunday, March 2, 1930 at St. Vincent's Hospital at Indianapolis. The family was all present when the end came, excepting her father. Her last words were, "I am going, Good Bye." She united with the M.E. Church at Mt. Pleasant at the age of 14 years under the pastorate of Rev. Freeman. In 1919 she moved her membership to Mill Grove, and had tried all these years to live a faithful Christian live, attending church services when health and opportunity would permit. In 1921 she became affiliated with the Quincy Chapter of the Eastern Star, No. 298. Our loved one will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her as a neighbor and friend. She was of a sunny disposition, bearing her suffering with much patience. She was a faithful companion and a loving mother, and always greeting everyone with a smile. Death came as thief, And stole our loved one away, Not ours to ask the reason why, but ours to say Thy will be done, With a gentle smile and a Wave of the hand, She wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair, It needs must be done since she lingers there. Funeral services held at M.E.
