CONTINUATION OF THE RUNNELS MURDER TRIAL
STRONG LOCAL FEELING AGAINST THE PRISONER

Indianapolis Sentinel; February 20, 1879

Martinsville, February 19-- The trial for Runnels for the murder of
John Radcliffe progresses slowly. The forenoon was occupied by the
jurors and attorneys visiting the grounds and surroundings where
the body was found. This afternoon concluded the evidence for the
State. While there seems to be many circumstances that go to show
that Runnels may be the guilty party, there is no positive evidence
that he did the deed. It was claimed previous to this trial that
different persons saw Runnels on the morning of the murder coming
from that direction, but only one witness has testified to that fact
and he was not quite sure that it was he at the time, but has since
made up his mind that it must have been him. The neighbors and friends
of the deceased it seems have fully made up their minds that Runnels
is the guilty man, and it has already been whispered that if the
evidence is not sufficient to convict him he will not be permitted to
living in that section of the county. Tomorrow will probably conclude
the testimony for the defense.
