SAD STORY

Marion Township, Owen county

There were many burials in the pioneer days, besides those in cemeteries which are not recognized as graveyards today. In most cases, no stones were erected and the sites have been forgotten. Six such sites were reported in the Marion Township area by various persons, but any accuracy is impossible and I feel that if there were this many in the Marion Township area; there were certainly others in the various townships throughout the county.

The really sad part of this is, aside from the graves being in this situation, is that there is no way for any of the researchers of these families to even find these persons. So, perhaps if you are searching for someone in the Marion township area, and cannot find them-- it is possible that they had ended up in one of the following areas.

The following items appeared in the DAR Chapter Cemetery Book for Owen county.

1. A site is 1 and 1/2 miles south of Patricksburg (Section 22). Reportedly miners dug into one grave by accident when stripping nearby. There is supposed to be a stone, but it was never found.

2. A site about 2 miles west of Patricksburg in Section 8. There was once a small family graveyard here. The name is now forgotten, but it may have been Randolph.

3. There were once graves in Section 5 near the Clay County line. There were once sandstone markers which were removed and the site was farmed.

4. Reportedly, there were graves two miles southwest of Patricksburg in the north part of Section 20. It is said that the owner used to keep it fenced so that his stock could not disturb this area.

5. There may have been graves 2 1/2 miles east of Beech Church and some distance north, either in Section 29 or 30. Only one person seemed to know about it and he wasn't sure if there were graves there or not.

6. Someone reported burials in the southwest part of Section 35, but if so, no trace remains today and even the identity of the reporter can not be assured.
