Stone Workers (All Kinds)
This page updated September 11, 2009
Within the category of Stone Workers there are several different individuals occupations mentioned. There were Stone Masons and Stone Cutters which some people categorize as the same thing/different name. I find the the term "mason" implies building something of the stone while the term "cutter" implies the actual cutting or carving out of the stone. Each man I assume had a different view of just what job he performed. Some of these men worked in the area of creating tombstones, and still others designated "tombstone cutter" as a different profession entirely.
Another area in the Stone work category is the Stone Quarry workers. These were the men who worked in various areas of the counties excavating the limestone from the earth. These quarries provided much opportunity for employment for many families. I will attempt to make the notation with each man as to the different category they fall into within the "Stone Workers" area.
Whether "Stone Mason" or "Stone Cutter", I think it is important to note that each of these designations is how the men thought of themselves.
