Bethany is one of the oldest churches in the county; its history well documented. Years ago the Surber cemetery was swallowed up by brush and trees (big ones). Stones had sunk into oblivion. There are many more burials than can be accounted for. John Snoddy's RW record can be obtained from Owen Co. Library... tell Tammy Carney, librarian I sent you...tcarney@owenlib.org. Isaac Reed, noted Presby. missionary, is connected with the church's origin. He lived at Gosport in the l820's as a base for his circuit through Greene County and into Vigo, etc. ~~Dixie KR
