Undertakers/Funeral Directors
This page updated January 15, 2008
The funeral director or undertaker was of course the person who prepared the
body for burial. In earlier times, the deceased laid in state in the home, not in a funeral home.
The deceased was normally taken to the undertaker for preparation and later returned to the family
for home viewing.
Many times, the undertaker also functioned in the position of the coroner for an area. This would involve examining and setting the time of death as well as preparing the body for viewing later. A few of the men listed below have only died within the past 10 years and their funeral homes are still operational in both Gosport and Cloverdale.
