Remembering Vance

Vance Lockhart was born in Ashland township of Morgan County, Indiana. However, he spent his childhood within Harrison township of Owen County.

Vance left us yesterday on March 11, 2003 in Greencastle, Putnam County, IN.

He began his formal education at the Lopossa School and later attended the Asher School. In the year 1938, he graduated from Quincy High School. Vance later went on to serve in the Navy during World War Two; prior to that he had worked his way through Purdue University, he graduated with an Agricultural degree during his time in the Navy.

Vance wasn't around as much as the other uncles were, his career took him to many areas of the world; both in the US and abroad. However, in retirement, he still returned close to the area of his youth-- Putnam County where he remained.

He loved to cook, garden as well as play the piano.

Intellectually, Vance was close to a genius, but this didn't make him intimidating in anyway. My most vivid memory of him is of climbing hills and sliding down enbankments to gain access to cemeteries we were visiting, he being more the energetic, enthusiastic "boy" then the 80 year old man he was.

His recollection for details of long since dead ancestors was just amazing...complete to dinners eaten with them as a child.

In the past year though, his life has been reduced to hospitals and much pain. Although I will miss him very much, I know that he is no longer in pain, and when you care about someone...that matters more.

I am specifically grateful that he was allowed to go in his sleep peacefully.

I miss you Vance...
