FRED VAUGHN

Greencastle Star Press, 22 December 1900

The Spencer Democrat says: One of our neighbor boys has always wanted to run on a railroad. He married a few years ago and went to Lafayette, this State, to run on the Monon from there to Brazil, and this fall he went to Decatur, Ills., with his family. On the night of the second of this month, he, "Fred Vaughn", as that was his name, was coupling a train and by some mishap the bumpers caught his arm and literally tore it from his body. He fell with his head under the train and the cars ran over him and cut him in two. The cars rolled over his head over and over and cut his face terribly. He was brought back and buried at Quincy, this county on Wednesday, by the side of his brother-in-law who was killed on the railroad a few years ago.

MARIETTA (KNOX) VAUGHN

Owen County Democrat 12 August 1920

Marietta (Knox) Vaughn, youngest child of James and Ann Knox was born near Patricksburg, Indiana, May 22, 1865 and departed this life July 24, 1920, aged 55 years, 2 months and 22 days. On December the 24th 1896, she was united in marriage to Barnett G. Vaughn. Three children came to bless this union, Annice, Lucinda and John Robert. The youngest daughter, Lucinda went to be with her savior, March 19, 1911 at the early age of eleven years. While yet young Marietta was united with the M.E. church at Patricksburg. Marietta was a loving companion, a devoted mother, and a good, honest upright Christian neighbor. She had been in failing health all spring, but was able to be up and see after her work until four weeks ago when she took to vomiting. Medical aid was summoned and with all the medicine and good nursing we were unable to bring her to health. Marietta was very patient during her illness and always had a pleasant, hopeful look and a cheerful smile for all who came to see her. She was always saying that we did so much for her, but that all it seems was very little when it came to restoring her to health. Although she gave up the hope of living a while longer for she said that her children needed her yet. Though she had worked and planned many ways to give her children an education and had the pleasure of seeing Anice among the Spencer High School graduates of 1918, her son, John among the Owen county graduates of 1920, she felt that John _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ would need a mother's care, encouragement and cheerful words and smiles until he too could sit with the Spencer High School graduates and that Annice still needed mother, while she was teaching in the community. She was a woman who loved her children and sacrificed much in order to give them an education and start them on a path that leads to progress and not only that but eternal life beyond the grave. She leaves to mourn her loss a devoted husband, a daughter, Annice and son John; two brothers, John Knox of near Patricksburg and Robert at Usk, Washington and one half-brother, William. Besides these she leaves many Nephews, nieces and cousin, and a host of friends and neighbors. A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is still, A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. Funeral services were conducted at the house Monday by Rev. Collins, pastor of the M.E. church at Spencer, after interment was at the New Hope Cemetery.
