Washer Women/Launderess

This page updated October 12, 2005

There were very few positions that women could respectively hold outside of the home. The most popular one was that of a teacher, however teachers were not allowed to be married women. Therefore, that left very few choices for the widow alone with children to feed and support. Many women turned to taking in the washing of other people in order to keep the wolves away from the door.
