With the arrival of the various factories,
the occupation of the night watchman was created.
This man would remain on the premises to guard against thieves, break-ins and the like. The nightwatchman was not
much different from the town crier of old. The nightwatchmen in a sense date back to the days of Paul Revere with "one if by land".
