Tarlton Wilson was a son of Jesse Wilson and Rachel (Boone) Wilson of old Burke County, NC, Wayne County, KY and Monroe Co. IN. Tarlton married Charlotte Vance in Green Co. KY, but seems to have lived for a time in Clay township of Owen County. He returned to Green County, then moved back to Indiana around the time his father died. He was living in Richmond township of Monroe County when the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census were taken, and three of his daughters and one son were married while he lived there. (Debbie's Note: I found this on the internet, the submitter is unknown; thought it might be of interest to someone on our website) It is in poor shape and the back cover and front page are missing, so the copyright date cannot be identified. However, the title page for the New Testament bears the imprimateur "Stereotyped by E. White, New York." The Bible is large (8-1/2 x 11) and covered in calf. It appears that Tarlton began recording birth and death information upon the death of a son in 1834. The first four birth entries and the son's death entry are recorded in the same careful hand, with a quill pen. Later entries are less carefully written, with various inks and slightly different hand. Beginning in 1846, entries appear to have been made with a steel-tipped stylus instead of a quill. Tarlton did not both to record any marriages, and only listed births of the first child of three of his children, though he had many other grandchildren. Indeed, the Bible does not record births of any of the eight children of his firstborn, Martha Ann Milby who married Alexander Milby and remained in Green County, KY. The first column of the second births page was left blank, as if he meant to obtain and record the dates when he obtained them. There were no entries after 1877. Possibly, the Bible was left in Indiana after Tarlton and some of his family moved back to Green County in the early 1880s. We have no clue as to how the Bible made its way to Michigan. Tarlton's name was generally spelled without an "e" in Kentucky and Indiana records. However, in this Bible, he spelled it with an "e" when his birth date was recorded in 1834, but without the "e" when he recorded the death of daughter Martha Ann Milby in 1870. We do not know why he changed the spelling, but his beautiful penmanship suggests that he had substantial schooling and the change was intentional. Entries are reproduced exactly as shown in the Bible. Sometimes he capitalized the months; at other times he did not. April was spelled with an e at the end. Sometimes middle names of children were not capitalized. He sometimes used two dots instead of "th" after the day of a month. No commas were used. Daisy Wilson's birth date seems to have been added by a different person. First child, Martha seems to have been especially important to Tarlton, as she was identified as his daughter in both the birth and death record. Her name was written in the death record with a period after both Martha and Ann, as if he had paused at each name before he could write on. ============================ BIRTHS: Tarleton Wilson was born Sept the 24th day 1811 Charlotte Wilson his wife was born march the 15th 1811 Marthyan Wilson their first born was born June the 5th 1831 John milton Wilson was born December the 9th 1832 William Wilson was born november the second day 1834 Ruth Jane Wilson was born may the 3rd day 1836 Margaret ellen Wilson was born aprile the 28th day 1838 Mary Frances Wilson born aprile 19 . .1841 Rachel Elizabeth Wilson born February the 27 day 1843 Sarah Emaline Wilson was born march 30th 1846 Lucy Catherine Wilson was born oct 16 1846 Susan Alice Wilson was born oct the 1st 1851 [next page; first column left blank] Martha A.
