Afternoon at We were able to go on our Cemetery Tour as planned; however we were not able to visit as many cemeteries as I had originally planned due to a late start.
I thought that many of you may want to hear about how it went and the conditions that we found in each cemetery.
As I have not gotten the film developed yet, I will list to the best of my memory, just what photos we took at each cemetery.
In addition to the cemeteries, Carl Lockhart was able to provide much background data on the communities as we drove through them. He is just great at this and has an impeccable ability to recall smaller details.
I recieved a tour around Quincy and view the point that the annual picnic was held. I also gleaned data on various families that resided there and old businesses. I was shown the location of the entrance of both Porter's Cave and Roger's Cave. Along with a story of his exploration of one as a boy (his parents didn't know about it).
We drove past the old Asher school and as he attended it, he was able to relate just where the old baseball diamond was and where they drew water from for the class. This was completed by showing me in his hand just where he has a scar from getting some of the material that used to cover the school yard into his hand. I also photographed the school that is now a community center (a small one).
We also stopped by the old Lopossa school of which I got photos of also. I also got out of the car to explore it inside and obtained a couple of pieces of wood from it as it is in a very derelict condition.
Below is a listing of the cemeteries we visited and for a description of how they were found and a listing of the photos taken, please visit the links.
Sadly we were unable to locate the Alaska Cemetery. We spent much time at each cemetery looking for hidden stones, probably too much time.
I encourage anyone contemplating a cemetery visit to not put it off very long...Many of the older stones are slowly disappearing and will no longer be there shortly.
